In 2023, under the theme Illusions of Light and Shadow, the festival invites everyone to immerse themselves in a world where memories and images interlace. Here, visuals are not merely vessels for storytelling; they are carriers of emotion. Through the seamless fusion of 5G technology and artistic expression, the exhibition integrates Yilan’s rich natural landscapes and cultural textures, creating a magical realm of light and shadow — breathing new life and perspective into the city.

Featuring artists from Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and beyond, this year’s Image Festival: Illusions of Light and Shadow breaks the boundaries between the virtual and the real through the integration of 5G technology.

The festival brings together a diverse group of visionary creators, including Hong Kong’s XCEPT team — known for leading trends in tech-based projection art — interdisciplinary Japanese artist Futa Kera, internationally acclaimed Indigenous Taiwanese artist An Sheng-Hui, and Taiwanese new media artist Cheyu Wu. Together, they present a series of immersive works and large-scale light sculpture performances that celebrate the beauty of audiovisual art.
